Congratulations to Spanish professional golfer Sergio García Fernández for winning The BrandLaureate International Brand Personality Award.
Garcia who plays on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour has won 31 international tournaments as a professional, most notably the 2008 Players Championship and the 2017 Masters Tournament.
2017 was an incredible year for Garcia who won the title “European Tour Golfer of the Year” for the first time, with three tournament wins — the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February, the Masters Tournament victory in April, and the Andalucía Valderrama Masters in October. it was the first time he had recorded three wins in a single European Tour season.
“I’ve always felt I should do things 100 percent or not do them. It’s all or nothing. That’s what makes me a good athlete – doing things with all the ‘ganas’ I can.” — Sergio Garcia
Born in 1980, in Borriol, García started playing golf when he was a child, swinging his first club when he was only 3- years-old under the supervision of Víctor García, his father, teacher, and mentor.
At 15, García made the cut in a European Tour event and turned pro three years later.
His name went around the world when he qualified for the 1999 Ryder Cup after only a few months of competition. That same year, “El Nino” made international headlines at the PGA Championship at Medinah Country Club, hitting a shot remembered all around the world.
Trailing Tiger Woods by a single stroke, he hit an incredible shot from behind a tree on the 16th hole and managed to get the ball to the greens.Woods ended winning that tournament, but that shot will be remembered forever.
“Obviously, the good thing about golf, it’s difficult to really, really blow it after five holes unless it goes really, really, really… really, really, really wrong. But you still have 13 to go, and if you have a good run, where you make five or six birdies, you can get it back somehow.” — Sergio Garcia.
Since then, García had a brilliant career by being in the OWGR Top 10 for more than a decade, winning tournaments everywhere (Europe, United States, Africa, and Asia).
Apart from that, he was a member of the European Ryder Cup team from 1999 until 2012 (excepting 2010), holding an impressive record.
Besides golf, García loves sports and enjoys playing tennis or football whenever he has spare time. He is also a fan of Real Madrid and his passion for football made him the president and player of Borriol CF, a 3rd division team in the Spanish football league.
Indeed, Sergio García is an exceptionally talented golfer, who is well deserving of The BrandLaureate Award in recognition of his meritorious contribution to the industry.
“I am what I am. I love golf, I love my life, I love my family and friends.” — Sergio Garcia
