MUR2017: Malaysian United Run attracted 40,000 participants

Endorsed by The BrandLaureate as “The Largest Youth Participated Run In Malaysia.”

RISE and shine. The Sepang International Circuit came alive again after the last F1 race on Oct 1, as about 40,000 students from around Malaysia took part in the Malaysian United Run (MUR 2017) in the early morning of Nov 18, 2017.

Donned in a smart white T-shirt with the pink MUR logo, participants traveled across the country, from over 60 colleges and universities from various states including Malacca and Johor, and converged at the former F1 circuit as early as 5 am, to participate in the unity run.

The 5km charity run with the theme ‘Let’s Light Up our Children’s Future’, was officiated by Malaysian Defense Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein Onn, who is also the patron of Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ).

MUR2017 is also endorsed by The BrandLaureate as “The Largest Youth Participated Run In Malaysia.” During the event, President DrKKJohan and Chairman Tan Sri Rainer Althoff presented a certificate of endorsement to Datuk Hishammuddin, on behalf of IOJ, before flagging off the charity run.

Excited by the success and huge turnout at the event,  Datuk Hishammuddin said: “MUR 2017 is a sporting event with a deeper cause – as we believe that every child deserves to live a quality life, in line with what IOJ stands for, as we strive to unite society and encourage the spirit of volunteerism amongst the youths.

Also present at the event was the CEO of institute Onn Ja’afar Charles Mohan; and Chief Minister of Malacca Datuk Wira Ir. Idris Haron.  During MUR2017, participants were also entertained by homegrown artists like Jaclyn Victor, Dayang Nurfaizah, Altimet and Dangerdisko.

The main sponsors of the event are Sapura, Techtrend and Weststar, amongst others.

“We believe that MUR 2017 will pave the way ahead and inspire other organizations on how they can bring a positive change to the lives of the underserved,” said Hishammuddin, adding that IOJ will be donating RM250,000 in support of underprivileged children in Malaysia after the run.

*Note: In 2015, the inaugural launch of the Malaysians United Run campaign witnessed over 17,000 student participants. The event was recognized by the Malaysian Book of Records as the Largest Participation of College Students in a Volunteerism Campaign Run.
