Congratulations to Dame Vera Lynn (CH., DBE., Lld., M.Mus.) the wartime singer who celebrated her 100th birthday in 2017, for receiving The BrandLaureate Award.
BORN on March 20, 1917 in East Ham, London, Lynn was famous for her performances and musical recordings during the Second World War, with hits such as “The White Cliffs of Dover” and “We’ll Meet Again”.
Lynn’s charisma and popularity remained after the war, and she captivated the hearts of fans on radio and television in the UK and US with other classical hits such as “Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart” and her UK No.1 Single, “My Son, My Son”.
“I’ve never claimed to be a great singer but I’ve always given my best, and I’ve loved what I’ve done, and had a very good life.” – DAME VERA LYNN
The `Forces’ Sweetheart’ recently made a comeback with a newly released album ‘Vera Lynn 100’ to commemorate her centennial year, which sold more copies than any other album released by a female artist in the UK this year.
Released in March, the album went to No.3 in the charts, which makes Lynn the oldest living artist to score a Top 10 album on the Official Album Charts, beating younger competitors including Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey and Zara Larsson, to top the new list released by the Official Charts Company.
It features re-orchestrated versions of her best-known songs, cover versions by singers including Alfie Boe and Aled Jones, and a previously unreleased recording of Lynn, singing Sailing, the 1972 Sutherland Brothers song later made famous by Rod Stewart.
“It’s truly humbling that people still enjoy these songs from so many years ago, reliving the emotions of that time,” said Lynn in an interview earlier this year.
“I got so many letters. I still get them now, and I’m always moved by them. It seemed extraordinary that soldiers would come back from the war and write to thank me for what I had done. It made me feel very humble, and that’s why I’ve always done everything I can to thank them back.” – DAME VERA LYNN
Apart from her phenomenal success in the entertainment industry, Lynn also made an astounding impression to the world by devoting her time and energy to charitable groups for ex-servicemen and disabled children.
Her contributions to various humanitarian effort such as the formation of the cerebral palsy charity SOS (The Stars Organization for Spastics) and the Vera Lynn Charity Breast Cancer Research have also inspired and touched the hearts of many.
Indeed Vera Lynn is truly deserving of The BrandLaureate award for making a remarkable impression in the music and entertainment world, and for showing great devotion in improving the lives of people around the world.
“You hear people go on about unpopular wars, but show me a popular one. Nobody in their right mind wants to go to war, but when it happens you have to get behind your troops.” – DAME VERA LYNN
