WHILE the attention is on the Olympics, our very own squash queen Nicol David steals the limelight after being listed as among the Top 20 greatest athletes in the world right now’ by UK’s The Telegraph.
The article placed the Penangite at number 17 in its list that include several Olympians competing in Rio including gymnast Simone Biles, sprint king Usain Bolt, tennis star Serena Williams and swimming sensation Michael Phelps.
The daily wrote: “Not many athletes can claim to have enjoyed the sort of dominance Nicol David has had in the world of squash. The 32-year-old Malaysian was world number one for a record 109 months until September last year and has won three gold medals at World Games, two Commonwealth golds and a remarkable eight World Open titles.’’

Nicol is listed at No. 17 out of the 20 athletes featured. The caption reads:

Nicol is featured side by side with other sporting greats like Novak Djokovic (Tennis), Michael Phelps (Swimming), LeBron James (Basketball) and Serena Williams (Tennis). Nicol had posted the article on her fan page Facebook account and said: “In good company at number 17 of this list by The Telegraph.”
Those who commented on her posting said it was “well deserved” with some saying she could have won the nation’s first gold medal if squash was part of the Olympics.
The list starts with Biles who led her team to pick up a gold in the women’s gymnastics team final.
Phelps has 21 Olympic gold medals — the most decorated athletes in the Games while Usain — who holds the 100m world record at 9.58s — has promised an exciting performance in his final appearance in the Olympics.
